my first shoujo was Fruits Basket and i loved that it actually dived into darker topics and had well written chracters so i picked up Mars, Sand Chronicles, Orange, and the Other Side of the Mirror! i have My Broken Mariko coming in so i cant wait to read that one. in need of more tragic, deep recommendations too. i heard Three Days of Happiness is good too

I think a good way to read similar shojo/josei manga like Mars would be to look for releases around that time thats is early 2000 to 2007ish. That era of manga had a huge emphasis on themes like severed family connections, fleeting emotions and strong childhood memories featured like nostalgic flashbacks. I feel even the art style reflected that. Authors I would recommend who captured these themes well would be Ashihara Hinako, Ai Yazawa early works, Obata Yuuki, Nemo Yoko, Aruga Rie and many more.
